Why is my Cheaha account on hold?

I am attempting to log in to Cheaha via SSH or Open OnDemand and am receiving a notice that my account has been placed on hold. Why is this occurring and what can be done about it?

A hold placed on your account is intended to be a temporary measure intended to protect you, the system, and the university. We love it when our researchers are working at their best and don’t like placing accounts on hold. Sometimes it can be to everyone’s benefit to temporarily suspend access for some researchers. If you find yourself placed on hold, please don’t worry and contact us as soon as possible.

Some reasons for putting accounts on hold include:

  • Excessive resource usage (storage, inodes, data io, etc.) that negatively impacts other researchers.
  • Incomplete Account Certification. Please see our Account Certification docs page for more information.
  • Misuse of system resources (crypto mining, private for-profit projects not related to research, etc.)
  • Possible violations of other IT Policies
  • Possible violations of HIPAA or FERPA

This is not an exhaustive list. Please contact Support if you believe your account is being held in error, or would like to learn more about the hold.

Please see our Account on Hold docs page for more information.
