I added folks to my Champions account, now what do I tell them?

I added some users to my ACCESS Campus Champions allocation. They have never used XSEDE, and never had individual logins for any of the providers.

What should I tell them to do now, in terms of logging in to the machines? Is it on ACCESS website somewhere? Do they go to the individual provider’s website and find the way to request an account? Will they get some kind of email telling them they have been added with instructions on what to do next?

Hi Lisa,
I believe sharing your credits let’s them skip some of the allocation proposal steps. So at this point, they need to set/verify an access-ci login and choose a ‘resource’ to ‘submit an exchange request’ to use the credits on.
Here’s the overview webpage: ACCESS Allocations: Get started: overview

Steps for your users:

  1. please register for an account on the new ACCESS portal at your convenience.
  2. ACCESS Allocations: Use credits: overview

Hi Stephen,

I’m still not quite sure how this works. I am the PI, not just for the CChampions but I am a PI on a (formerly-XSEDE) Research Project. So I wrote the proposal and I add people to my Allocation for my awarded project. Do my group members then each have to apply somehow or submit exchange request to use the credits on our project?

Thanks for your help,
Lisa

Hi Stephen, I have an update.

PSC (Bridges2) sent folks an email with instructions on accessing Bridges. I will see if other providers do the same.

Oh, I didn’t think ‘resources’ would be aware of or contact the users. I though the X credits would have an exchange rate at various ‘resources’ (Calculator for Rate: ACCESS Allocations: Exchange Calculator)
After they setup an account they pick a resource (e.g. Bridges2) to exchange ACCESS credits for Bridges2 credits (for example). Then they would then use the SUs they have assigned by PSC.
I’m excited to learn how this all works in practice!

Hi Stephen, I think that only the person who requested the Allocation would have access to the credits, right? To make up a ridiculous example, say I got ACCESS credits to teach some ML on Bridges2. If instead of me trading them for Bridges2 credits and setting everything up and telling students how to log in, my students got those credits and traded them in, they could all decide to set up webservers on Jetstream2.

I added those folks to Expanse and they did not get email yet. But Expanse’s User Portal accepts ACCESS credentials, so maybe I don’t need to worry about it. (I suspect they will not insist on logging in with ssh from a terminal…)

Jetstream2’s documentation has info for how to log in using ACCESS credentials.

I would still need to figure that out for each of the other resources in order to give my group members instructions. It seems like it will be a daunting task for people who have never used these resources.

It would be good to have a central location to summarize these things…I guess this thread is a start, right?

Hello All,

Couple steps are necessary both for the potential user and PI of the CC or any PI of an allocation. Every user will need to have an ACCESS ID or a carry over ID from XSEDE. Once a PI has an award of ACCESS credits these credits will need to be Exchanged(transfer) for actual service units(SUs) on a resource or resources. Once the award is on a resource(s) the PI will need to add the user(s) to the resource(s) by going here:

https://allocations.access-ci.org/user_management

Hope this helps.
