How do I transfer files to/from RMACC Summit as an XSEDE user?

I am an XSEDE user and I want to move data to and from the RMACC Summit HPC cluster. How can I do this?

Good question!

Unfortunately, because of the use of the XSEDE SSO, RMACC users cannot use command line tools (scp, sftp, rsync, Rclone, etc) to transfer files to CURC systems, including RMACC Summit. We have instead set up a Globus endpoint for RMACC XSEDE users that you can use.

Here are some notes on how to do it:

  1. Go to the Globus authentication page (https://auth.globus.org) and login. You can login via your institution if it is listed, or you can login with your XSEDE credentials (XSEDE is listed as one of the organizations). Or, you can just create a Globus ID or login with Google or OrciD (Globus accounts are free and easy to set up for anyone).

  2. once you are logged in to Globus, you can set up your personal endpoint (the Globus endpoint on your laptop or desktop computer) by navigating to “Endpoints” on the blue bar on the left of the screen, and then select “Create a Personal Endpoint” near the top of the screen. Follow the prompts to install the personal endpoint.

  3. Once you’ve installed your personal endpoint, go back to the “File Manager” in the Globus user interface and access it by searching “Collections” box for the name of it (e.g., “John Doe’s Laptop”). This will open your personal endpoint and display your files.

  4. On the other half of the Globus user interface, find the CURC XSEDE endpoint (the endpoint on our system) by searching for “CU Boulder Research Computing XSEDE” in the “Collection” box in the “File Manager” section of Globus. Then login using your XSEDE credentials and accept the Duo push to your phone.

  5. You will now be able to transfer files between your personal (laptop) endpoint and the CURC system via the CURC XSEDE endpoint. Navigate by point-and-click or use the “path” box to specify the path to the directory you are interested in. Select the files you want to transfer and press start. An email will be sent when the transfer is complete.
