Come join us at JAX! We are looking for someone to help architect our research networking environment as we scale with the demands of biomedical research.
As an IT Architect in the Research Information Technology group at The Jackson Laboratory, your focus on networking technologies in our research computing environment will help lead the architectural design and implementation of infrastructure supporting our faculty, researchers, computational scientists, and organizational initiatives around translational biomedical science and data science. Our research computing environment spans multiple geographic locations, melding on-premises computing and storage resources (HPC, LIMS platforms, data science applications and platforms) with cloud computing infrastructure (AWS, GCP, and Azure) to capture and analyze data produced by a variety of scientific instruments to drive JAX research outcomes.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions
- Design, develop, integrate, and deploy networking technology solutions including enhancements to currently deployed services (for example: inter-cloud VPCs, VPN tunnels, QoS, Science DMZs, etc.).
- Analyze the IT environment to detect and identify critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
- Conduct research and develop, document, and communicate roadmaps and plans for investing in research computing infrastructure, including analysis of cost reduction opportunities.
- Work with IT Leadership to set standards (methodology, technology implementation, and code) and provide architectural expertise, direction, and assistance to system administrators, system engineers, networking engineers, other architects, and software development teams.
- Documentation of solution architecture design, roadmaps, and analysis work.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis, or a related field of study. Master’s degree preferred.
- 8-10 years of IT experience, specifically in networking and strategic planning.
- Broad knowledge and awareness across all architectural domains (business, application, information, integration, platform, networking, security, and systems management).
- Ability to organize, prioritize, manage and monitor multiple projects to successful completion, adapting to shifting priorities in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to translate business needs into architectural requirements and with support, estimate the financial impact of proposed architectural solutions and their alternatives.
Desired Experience:
- Strong experience with Linux, including scripting on-premises network deployments and using orchestration tools for cloud deployments.
- Broad experience with on-premises virtualization networking, VXLAN encapsulation, and disaster recovery.
- Experience with internet routing, BGP, OSPF, EVPN, VXLAN, and other internetworking protocols and Cisco-style (IOS) or Arista-style (EOS) switch configurations.
- Experience working in a research or academic environment, supporting the needs of grant-funded research projects.
Desired Skills:
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation, and negotiation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to mentor and coach others.

About JAX:
The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,400 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in Augusta, Maine, a genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Connecticut, and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, California, and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.
JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
