Director, Research Advanced Computing Services @ University of Oregon

The University of Oregon (UO), an AAU-member research university and Oregon’s flagship institution, seeks a Director to lead Research Advanced Computing Services, a unit of the University’s central Information Services organization. Capitalizing on the reputation the Information Services organization has developed, the Director will bring a new level of vision and creativity and a strategic approach to supporting leading-edge advanced computing technology and services that advance the University’s research mission.

Reporting to the Associate CIO for Technology Infrastructure, the Director of Research Advanced Computing Services (RACS) is responsible for providing strategic leadership, fiscal stewardship, and operational oversight for RACS, including the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Core Facility. In addition to overseeing HPC, the Director is responsible for building out mid-tier services that position RACS as a full-service destination for research computing services. The Director is responsible for aligning the RACS workforce with University objectives for diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as increasing diversity among faculty customer base by lowering barriers to entry to HPC and performing outreach to a broad range of faculty from multiple academic disciplines across campus.

The Director manages an established set of responsibilities while defining and pursuing a set of longer-term goals that will enhance the organization’s capacity and its ability to support UO research. At the scale of the University and of RACS, the Director will be able to be hands-on in several aspects of the role while always focusing on the larger opportunities. A few top priorities for the Director include developing and securing support for a comprehensive plan for research computing at UO that rests on a sustainable business model encompassing multiple funding streams such as University financing, grants, user fees, cost-shares, gifts, endowments, etc.; broadening the solution set RACS offers beyond HPC and into research-support services and a University-wide engagement with computational research; aligning with the President’s Initiative on Data Science to help realize its transformative impact on curriculum, instruction, and research; leveraging the extraordinary $1.5B investment in the Knight Campus with its distinctive approach to innovation. Candidates will possess a range of qualifications and competencies, some required, others preferred. To be considered, candidates must possess an undergraduate degree and five years of experience in an area of computing and/or information technology services represented in RACS; experience managing budgets with multiple funding sources; and experience leading and supervising personnel. Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree in science, computer science, and/or engineering; experience managing and protecting restricted data; experience working with faculty or clients in a computational domain; experience using HPC systems as a researcher; and experience developing and delivering tutorials, workshops, and lectures on high performance computing at the institutional, regional, and national levels.
